Moving Around

The city of Bilbao, due to its size, encourages people to move around on foot, by bicycle, or use public transport, enjoying the views of the different buildings and the landscape of the city.

BILBAO BIZKAIA CARD

Bilbao Bizkaia Card is our local touristic card that grants free access to public transport and to most of the museums in the city of Bilbao and the surroundings. It includes fast pass in the museums and guided tours around Bilbao. The Bilbao Bizkaia Card can be purchased directly at the various Bilbao Tourit offices in the City or on the Internet www.bilbaobizkaicard.com

METRO BILBAO (UNDERGROUND)

The Metro Bilbao was inaugurated in 1995 and it was designed by Sir Norman Foster. The entrances, called "fosteritos", have become a symbol of the city. The metro is the most convenient way to move around Bilbao. There are three lines (1, 2 and 3) designed with a "Y" shape to transit both banks of the Bilbao estuary (Nervión river) which then combine to form one line that ends in the south of Bilbao, by the sea shore, near a popular beach.

During the week the metro operates from 6:00 to 23:00 h. On weekends the metro offers a special night-time service. On Fridays the Metro works until 2:00 in the morning and on Saturdays it has a 24h service. To use the service, one has to purchase a Barik card. This card can also be used in the tram and local busses and grants free short connections between all three transportation modes.

TRAM

The street card makes the “Atxuri-La Casilla” route, with a central course that vertebrates the “Abandoibarra” area, with stops in front of several architectural landmarks, such as the Arriaga theatre, the Guggenheim Museum, or the San Mamés stadium, which is the home of the local soccer team, Athletic Club de Bilbao. Bilbao Tram line works from 6:00 to 23:00 during the week and from 07:00 to 23:30 on weekends. The nearest station to the conference venue is Guggenheim. As the rest of public transports, the tram can also be boarded using the Barik card.

BUS

The metropolitan bus service in Bilbao is called Bilbobus and comprises 44 bus lines and 517 stops all around the city. It works from 06:00 to 23:00. Bilbobus offers a variety of lines to move around the city, connecting all neighborhoods. Most of the vehicles are adapted for people with reduced mobility.

BICYCLE

There is an automatic bicycle loan service and numerous rental companies of conventional and electric bicycles. There are 41 points distributed throughout Bilbao.

The company Bilboats offers you two maritime-cultural visits: sailing Bilbao and sailing to the Sea.

CABLE CAR

An incredible panoramic view of Bilbao from the Artxanda hill not to be missed as well as an enjoyable stroll. From any point of Bilbao, you can access the lower station of the funicular in no more than 15 minutes. The “Paseo del Campo Volantín” is 100m away from the Funicular.
