How to arrive
Bilbao International Airport (BIO) is situated 12km away from Bilbao.
There is a bus service (Bizkaibus) that links the city with the airport every 30 minutes and with several stops in the Bilbao city center (Line A3247: Bilbao Intermodal-Aeropuerto). Bus tickets are directly available from the driver. The bus ticket is 3 euros (big notes are not allowed) or 1,14€ with Barik card.
At the airport, the bus departures are in front of the Arrivals Terminal. The stops in Bilbao include Alameda Recalde 14, Gran Vía 46 and Gran Vía 74. The final stop is Bilbao Intermodal (bus station). Timetable: from 6:00 h to 24:00 h.
The bus service between the city and the airport starts at 5:15 h and finishes at 21:45 h. Itinerary: Bilbao Intermodal, Gran Via 79, Plaza Moyúa (Hacienda), Alameda Recalde 11, Airport.Taxis are also available at the terminal. The price for the ride from the airport to Bilbao city center is 23-29€.
All regional, national and international bus and coach lines depart from the Bilbao Intermodal bus station (Gurtubay Street no. 1) This bus station can be reached via Metro (San Mamés metro stop), Tram (Zunzunegi stop), the RENFE commuter trains (San Mamés stop) and a number of different Bilbobus and Bizkaibus lines, the main transport company for Bicay County destinations. There is direct connection to reach San Sebastián-Donostia and Vitoria-Gasteiz, the other two main cities of the Basque Country.
Medium and long distance trains, operated by RENFE, arrive at main railway station (“Abando Indalecio Prieto Station”), in the city center. A network of railway lines converges in Bilbao. There is a daily service between Bilbao-Madrid and Bilbao-Barcelona and with other Spanish cities as La Coruña, Burgos, Logroño, Málaga, Segovia or Zaragoza too. Other short-distance and regional trains operated by EuskoTren and Feve: C1, C2 and C3.
The ferries transport people and vehicles three times per week on the Portsmouth-Bilbao-Portsmouth route, with two different ferries: the Cap Finistère and the Baie de Seine. These ferries, operated by Brittany Ferries, moor 20 minutes from the centre of Bilbao on the Zierbena Dock. Underground L2 or Bus lines A3135, A3321 and A333.
The AP-8 motorway (part of E-5, E70 and E-80) goes to Donostia/San Sebastián and Irún and continues to Bordeaux and Paris or Toulousse and Montpellier. The AP-68 motorway links with central Spain (Valle del Ebro), Madrid, Valladolid, and Portugal. The AP-7 motorway goes to the Mediterranean Coast.
